mmm…giant donut

15 Jul

So just for fun and to improve my cake decorating portfolio I used my giant donut pan to create a Simpsons cake!

It’s now one of my favourite creations since the show is one of my faves. I modeled Homer out of fondant and placed him atop the giant donut. I cut up the cake as if he was eating it. Looks like he has passed out on it in pure sugar bliss. Enjoy!

Toronto Pride 2010!

3 Jul

In celebration of Pride my friends and I have a tradition of holding a BBQ on the day of the Pride Parade. We go to my friend Claire’s place at Yonge and Bloor each contributing to the feast and then go watch the parade. This year I decided to make a big delicious rainbow donut cake.

My friends were amazing this year and pooled their money together for my birthday to get me a gift card to William Sonoma. Amazing. I got some great stuff but one of my favourite things was the donut cake pan. I couldn’t wait to use it and I thought it would be perfect for this occasion. The recipe for the cake is on the box and it yielded a very dense, pound cake type consistency with a chocolate glaze. I decorated it with rainbow sprinkles in honor of pride.

Cake Making – Using a Box Mix for Fondant Decorating

25 Jun

So I tend to make my cake creation recipes from scratch, but sometimes I don’t have all the ingredients and don’t want to spend the money buying all the ingredients. I just want something quick, easy and inexpensive. That’s when I turn to boxed cake mixes. Now these mixes usually turn out very fluffy and crumble easy. A way to counteract this in order to make tall sturdy structures that will support the weight of the fondant and decorations is to follow these steps:

1. Empty the mix into a bowl.

2. Add the amount of oil called for on the box.

3. Add 4 large eggs, instead of the amount called for on the box.

4. Add 1 cup buttermilk, instead of the milk or water called for on the box.

Now mix together as directed on box and pour into your desired pans. Cook as directed on box.
